Microsurgery

Since the 1960’s with the development of microsurgery, there have been an increasing number of success cases involving reconstruction. Microsurgery utilizes a microscope in the operating room to help re-establish blood flow with the reconnection of blood vessels and arteries. A specific area in which this technique is frequently used would be breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.

This procedure generally requires that a flap of skin and subcutaneous tissues be removed from the body and repositioned to form the breast mound. With the use of the microscope, even the smallest arteries, veins, and nerves are vascularized and a blood flow is restored to the transplanted flap. This flap technique is used to treat other injuries that require a closing or covering of a large portion of the skin and subcutaneous tissues as well.

The idea candidate for microsurgery would be:

  • Physically healthy
  • A non-smoker
  • Someone requiring a flap coverage or reattachment procedure

Dr. Chahin will discuss with you this procedure, and what is mutually felt to be the best method of treatment to aid in achieving optimal results for you.
